Let your child surprise you with handmade ornaments for the Holidays! This workshop will include hand building holiday ornaments in clay. These hand crafted treasures will be completed with beautiful glazed colors and fired in the kiln. Ornaments will be ready for pick up on Saturday, December 1st between 2pm-4pm.

Students will have fun learning a variety of sculpting and hand building techniques in clay allowing for unique personal expression! We will complete 3 or 4 clay projects, including animals, pots, and nature subjects—both from observation and imagination. Students will also learn how to glaze their wonderful creations in this clay session and all work will be fired in the kiln.

Design is the underlying foundation for all artwork! Students will love making non- objective art as they focus on color, pattern, and shape. We will explore these basic concepts with materials that will vary for each day of camp. We will look at abstract artists and talk about how we feel about color and what it means to make art without a specific subject matter. This will be fun for your very expressive artist.

Paint in the garden, travel to scenic places, and marvel at the beauty of the natural world! Young artists will create watercolor paintings and sculptures of birds, fish, leaves, and plants–exploring the wonder and beauty of nature.

Explore new techniques for making art using familiar materials. Students develop skills in drawing, painting, sculpture. Drawing skills will be enhanced as they learn the basics of proportion, perspective, shading, and more. We will work from life to paper, using a variety of materials including markers, colored chalk, pastels, oil pastels, and charcoal. Student work have an emphasis on shapes, forms, textures, composition, and light.
Additionally, we will create 3-D sculptures using innovative as well as traditional materials – found objects, clay, plaster, wire, and more to make amazing 3-D art.
Art history is introduced through the works of Vincent van Gogh, Georgia O’Keefe, Claude Monet, Cézanne, and Henri Matisse.

Acquaint yourself with the possibilities of learning drawing!
This course is designed to introduce and broaden a range of basic drawing and design skills. The varied skill levels at the beginning of the class will not be a problem. During the course students will be using a variety of media and tools, and will explore their visible environment. Further importance will be given to the expressive use of drawing materials as students explore their own personal mark making styles and their creative expression through drawing. Students will develop a general use of visual vocabulary and philosophy.

Students learn to paint in oil and/or acrylic paint. The course is designed to familiarize students with the formal elements of painting and build technical proficiency. Students paint in the studio, mostly from observed situations and still-life. Critical dialogue and frequent critiques figure largely in the learning process and encourage each student’s personal vision.

Art Lab – Developing Creativity
Art 71 offers a home school program that serves as an enrichment/elective course for students. Classes include 2-D and 3-D exploration, using a variety of media – charcoal, pastels, watercolors, acrylic, and sculpture materials.
Elementary (Grades K-5)
Theme based classes such as nature, portraits, animals, still life, abstract design and composition with the elements of design will be explored throughout this 12- week course. Various artists will be studied to compliment the lessons. Young artists will gain skill and confidence as they approach art in a meaningful way – “ I can do it!”
Intermediate School (Grades 6-8)
Explore different styles of art making through the use of varied art materials. This class will create artwork from observation as well as developing basic design skills and the principles of design. We will also develop imaginative skills as we expand our mind’s eye, and develop our creative skill talent.
Upper School (Grades 9-12)
This comprehensive course will cover the high school Foundations of Art guidelines for TEKS. The student will develop skills in Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, and making 3 –Dimensional art work using a variety of art materials. We will explore landscape, nature, self-portraits, still life, and other subject matter, as well as look at art history to enrich and deepen our understanding of why we create art.
