Design is the underlying structure for all creative endeavors. It is a way of seeing, choosing, and organizing art elements to create a dynamic whole. This course introduces students to the basic elements of design, working in two-dimensional space. Simply executed problems are directed to help students visually organize and understand formal issues, such as pattern and rhythm, and the effects of line, shape, value, texture, and color on a flat surface. Design elements will be introduced with a variety of materials and processes. This fundamental course is recommended to prepare students for classes in drawing, painting, printmaking,and 3-D Design. It is also highly recommended for portfolio students.
